The group of five 12-pounder guns mounted aft in the scout cruiser Forward. As a scout for the battle fleet she was expected to become involved in a close-quarter melee with ships performing a similar function for the enemy. On completion, therefore, she was armed with ten quick-firing 12-pounders mounted in groups of five forward and aft. The weapon fired a shell that actually weighed 12.5lb out to a maximum range of 11,000 yards. The mountings were unprotected, leaving their crews exposed to the elements and enemy fire, hand-worked and aimed by their individual gunlayers. By 1914 these weapons were considered too light for a cruiser and she had been re-armed with nine 4-inch and a single 3-inch anti-aircraft gun.
